05/28/2009
We currently have a limited number of sweet herb (Stevia rebaudiana) plants available for sale. Native to Brazil and Paraguay, stevia is a bright green tropical perennial with white flowers which grows up to one foot tall in a six inch pot. Also known as sugar leaf, the leaves of stevia are used as a natural, non caloric sweetener after being picked. They may be used fresh or dried and ground into powder. The sweetening agent in the leaves, stevioside, is 10 to 15 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia thrives in a warm, sunny and damp environment, and is hardy only to 45 degrees F.
