The Valerian Is In Bloom

05/22/2009
One of the nice things about living on an herb farm in the springtime are the continual changes which occur all around us on a daily basis. The warm weather this week has caused the valerian bed (Valeriana officinalis) to bloom. This bed is located on a hillside in a damp, partly shady area, and the plants, which are three years old, are enormous; over six feet tall! The pure white flowers make a marked contrast with the dark green foliage, and dispense a distinct musky aroma throughout the area.

Valerian has been used for a wide variety of medicinal purposes since ancient times, and at one time was thought to be a cure for epilepsy. Today, valerian root is recognized to be a safe, effective sedative which calms the nerves, improves digestion, and lowers blood pressure. Perhaps not coincidentally, the roots are also attractive to cats. They may be lifted the second year after planting and used fresh, for decoctions, infusions or tinctures.

Valerian is hardy from zone 5-9, and is a recommended medicinal herb for the home garden.
