Uses of Calamint
05/20/2009
There are a number of species of calamint (Calamintha) in Europe and Central Asia. Pink flowered and mint scented, several make attractive and showy perennials for dry sunny borders. Calamintha nepeta, or lesser calamint, grows up to 24 inches high, and is hardy in zones 5-10. The leaves of this aromatic herb may be used to relieve indigestion, depression, and insomnia. The leaves have a mint-marjoram flavor, and may be used to flavor roasts, vegetables and mushrooms. In colonial times, this herb was used to induce abortion, but is no longer recommended for this purpose.
