Recommended Cool Weather Herbs For Spring Planting
04/06/2009
The notoriously fickle spring weather in northern Virginia presents gardeners with a whole host of challenges, not least of which is choosing which herbs may be safely planted outside. As a rule, frost can occur throughout April, and sometimes as late as 15 May. Consequently, savvy gardeners delay planting their warm weather herbs like basil, stevia and marjoram until after the last frost date. Herbs which thrive during the warm days and cool nights of Virginia springs include parsley, cilantro and dill; as well as chives, mints, sages, oreganos and thymes. A good rule of thumb for planting warm weather herbs outside in northern Virginia is to wait until you put your tomato plants out.
