Using Lamb's Ear As A Groundcover In Northern Virginia
04/22/2008
Lamb's ears, (Stachys byzantina) is a fast growing perennial with soft fuzzy white leaves and pink flowers. Also known as wholly betony, this plant spreads both by seed and rhizomes, with stems commonly reaching 12 to 15 inches tall. An excellent ground cover for sunny dry areas where nothing else will grow, lamb's ears, once established, spreads quickly. One gallon plants planted in the spring can cover up to four square feet by fall, spreading even more quickly in subsequent years. This plant is also easily divided for propagation in the fall, and will tolerate a wide range of conditions.
