Drought Hardy Herbs

08/02/2007
The current drought in the Mid-Atlantic is causing problems for gardeners as well as farmers. Water loving herbs like basil, mint and parsley are particularly susceptible to dry conditions. However, there are a number of herbs which are remarkably drought tolerant, once established. They include sage, thyme, lavender, rosemary, fennel, chives, lovage, oregano, tarragon, liquorice, horseradish, echinacea, yarrow, wormwood and feverfew. Well established plantings of these herbs should survice even the longest drought with little care. Consequently, when planning herbal landscaping aroung your home, keep these herbs in mind if supplementary watering is not available.
