New Herbs for 2006 Season

We will be offering the following exciting new herbs for sale this season!

Calamint: an attractive, aromatic perennial which does well in containers and on dry sunny borders. The mint scented foliage can be used as a tea, as well as for various medicinal purposes.

Lamb's Ear: a hardy perennial with silver colored, soft and fuzzy leaves which does well in sunny dry areas. Excellent ornamental.

French Lavender: a fast growing, bushy gray/green lavender with indented leaves and light blue flowers which grows up to 3 feet tall. Fragrant, pale blue flowers are widely used in potpourris.

Lavender Hidcote Pink: an English lavender with pink, rather than blue flowers. Fast growing, very hardy, up to 24 inches tall.

Spanish Lavender: bushy shrub with dark purple flowers up to 24 inches tall. Scented leaves are used to aid digestion, promote healing, repel insects and stimulate the circulatory system.

Liquorice: hardy perennial herb with stoloniferous roots used to flavor candy, beer, tobacco , cough drops and numerous laxatives. Thrives in deep, rich, alkaline soil in sun.

Mustard, Brown: annual herb used to make the condiment which does well in rich, well drained, alkaline soil. Leaves may be eaten fresh or cooked (mustard greens) while seeds are ground to make brown mustard.

Rosemary, Hill Hardy: an upright, vigorous form developed in North Carolina reputed to be even hardier than the better known Arp.

Rosemary, Irene: a fast growing, creeping variety with masses of light blue flowers, excellent ground cover.

Santolina: also known as lavender cotton. Dense, aromatic shrub with silver leaves and yellow flowers up to 3 feet tall. With a strong chamomile aroma, the leaves are used to flavor meat, fish and grain dishes.

Sesame: tropical annual native to Africa grown for the seeds. Does best in well drained, sunny location. Seeds are dried, roasted and toasted and used with cakes, cookies and breads. Of note, the seeds are also an excellent dietary source of calcium.
