Nasturtiums Now In Bloom

06/05/2005
The Alaska nasturtiums are finally blooming! These perky white and green plants have been transplanted to 6 inch pots and are all coming into bloom in the greenhouse. The flowers range in color from bright yellow through various shades of orange all the way to a bright crimson red. (Remember, nasturtiums are also an excellent salad herb, both the leaves and flowers taste like radishes! ) As a cool season annual flower, nasturtiums enjoy cool, sunny and dry conditions. With the recent summer like heat which has just begun, we would recommend morning sun and afternoon shade for these plants. One final tip: if you continue to feed your nasturtiums, they will grow but will not bloom. If you want lots of flowers on your plant, stop feeding it. Flowers generally appear two weeks after feeding ends. While most plants show one color of flower, such as yellow, orange or red, it is possible for multiple colors to show up on the same plant.
